About Oven Mitts MN
It all started because everyone said I needed a hobby. The mortgage business was slow, and when I complained about being bored, my friends suggested all sorts of things I could do. They told me to write, to do volunteer work, or to take a few classes for fun. But I thought I had a better idea.
My grandmother used to make quilts, and I’d always wanted to sew a quilt. Problem was, I hadn’t sewn anything since junior high (I’d made a really good jumper!). Also, I didn’t own a sewing machine and knew that I wouldn’t likely sew an entire quilt by hand.
So I went down to a quilt store and they were going to charge me $25 a day to rent a machine, plus the cost of a class. That seemed a lot of money for a hobby, so I went to my local fabric store and found that I could take a class on making bags and they’d loan me a machine free of charge.
Long story short—I took the class, bought my own used machine for a bargain, and branched out to other “projects” when I got tired of making bags. I spent a few months making placemats for everyone I knew (plus past clients and others I didn’t really know), then I tried my hand at wine bags (another friend suggestion), and pillow cases for the local Ronald McDonald House. But then I decided to try oven mitts!
